Last night I only woke up two times – yay! When I did I was able to fall back to sleep within 20 minutes or so, unlike yesterday when I had napped too much the evening before and as a result ended up watching infomercials between 3:00 and 4:00 am. I have seen a lot of late night TV in the last 3 weeks. Want to know how to grow luxurious flowing hair on a bald head or lose 10 pounds in 10 days? I’m your man! But you better catch me quick because that info is fading fast as I am slowing but surely getting back into my regular sleep patterns.
Today I am preparing to go to the doctor’s office for the first follow up since the fusing of my L4 and L5 vertebrae. We will review X-rays of my back taken before and after the surgery to determine the success and to get an idea of how well the bone graft is taking on the metal cage that has replaced the disc. We will also talk about the lingering (but lessening!) sciatic nerve pain in my right leg which has now centered in my foot, review my chart tracking my walking times and medications, and discuss my prognosis which includes my return to work. While those are very important and memorable events to take place today, those are not the most important event of the day for me.
Today my wife Marta and I celebrate 26 years of marriage! The Lord has blessed us through those years. We met and were married only 4 months later. And though I would not recommend such a short engagement for others I must say it has worked out very well for us. The bible tells men that we are to love our wives “as Christ loved the Church”. My wife has made that easy. She has been a wonderful wife, mother, friend, helper, and soul mate throughout the years. There have been times that were rough and times that were difficult but the Lord helped us to pull through those difficult times as a couple. In the times when I am weak, frustrated, or so consumed with some task or project that I lose sight of the big picture she is strong and offers words of wisdom to help me reshape my focus. In times when she is tired or feeling down, the Lord has blessed me to be able to encourage her and remind her of just how special she is. My wife has been such a blessing to me.
As I check in with the physician today, I also want to be sure to check in with the Great Physician and let Him know how grateful I am for the last 26 years. God has blessed me with a good wife and a good marriage. I pray that the Lord will bless all the current marriages and the marriages to come in my family, in our congregation and amongst my friends. I know that God will bless those marriages as couples commit themselves unto Him and commit themselves to love one another in a godly way in the easy times and hard times. If you bring God into your marriage, you can rest assured that God has your back.
