It has been a busy couple of weeks at work and I decided to take this Friday off. I decided to take the day off not because it has been so busy but because of what my oldest granddaughter Avery said to me last week. Avery lives just down the street and she was visiting one night and she told her mom, “Pawpaw is going to take me to Cabela’s.” Cabela’s is a large retailer of hunting, fishing and camping gear and they have an awesome aquarium that Avery loves. I don’t know where she got the idea that I was going to take her so I asked her what she was talking about. She stuck to her story and said, “Remember Pawpaw, you promised you would take me. You can take me tonight.” At that point I assured her that we would go real soon. I have to admit that I don’t ever remember making that original promise. Maybe she was talking about all the neat stuff there one time and I made an offhand remark like, “We’ll have to go there sometime.” I don’t know what she heard but I do know what we are doing tomorrow. We are going to Cabela’s! Avery is going to get to look at the fish and see all the other things that fascinate her in that store. Pawpaw is going to keep that promise.
All this talk about making promises, remembering promises and keeping promises makes me thankful that we serve a God who is faithful to keep His promises. Our Lord never does or says anything offhand; nothing ever escapes His memory and He never fails to keep His promises. Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 5:24
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 1Thess 5:24
As special as it is to keep a promise to a granddaughter and go on a special outing together, the Lord has made us some even grander promises in His word. He promises that whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Rom 10:13). He promises that those who are weary can come to Him and they shall receive rest for their souls (Matt 11:29). The Lord promises that He will never leave nor forsake His children (Heb 13:5). Oh my goodness, the Lord has made some awesome promises! He will not forget them and He shall bring them to pass! Learn His promises and lean on His faithfulness! You will not be disappointed.
