Day 28 – What has God called you to do? How to Discover your spiritual gifts.

My recovery has been going very well.  I have not had to take any medication in the last 5 days other than the occasional Extra Strength Tylenol.  The nerve pain in my right leg and foot is practically gone – thank you Lord!  My routine is slowly beginning to more closely resemble the one I observed before my back surgery.  This weekend I was able to go to church.  As David said in Psalm 122:1

“I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.” Psalm 122:1

I had been the week before but only to attend the worship service and sit amongst the congregation.  That was nice and a pleasant experience; as a minister it is always good to be ministered to from time to time.  But this Sunday was particularly special for me because I had received clearance from the doctor to fill the pulpit, as long as I promised to take it easy and have a chair nearby for resting.  My wife added the additional restrictions of no jumping, bouncing, moon walking or any other movements in order to emphasize some point in the sermon.  I am happy to say that I was indeed able to stand during the entire 28 (?) minutes and do some walking around and without the need to rest until after we arrived back home.  If you would like a manuscript copy of the sermon “The Passing of the Torch” describing Samuel’s speech to the people in 1 Samuel chapter 12 as Saul is crowned king of Israel, shoot me an email.

The morning was a good morning and I was indeed glad to be in the House of the Lord.  I was also glad that I was able to share with God’s people as that is what the Lord has called me and gifted me to do; that’s my job.  Did you know God has a job for all of His Children?  The bible says in 1 Peter 4:10

1 Peter 4:10  As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Peter says “EACH ONE has received a special gift” and that includes you!  Yes, it’s true; God has special work in mind for every single child of His and He equips every child for that work.  Peter was not the only one to speak about spiritual gifts.   In his letter to the church at Corinth Paul said in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 that there are a variety of gifts and they are given to ALL OF US for the common good.  They are given to us by God and they manifest His Holy Spirit which is at work within us.  God blesses each of us with these spiritual gifts so that we can do the jobs that He has called us to do.  Sometimes people ask me, “How do I discover my spiritual gift?”  You discover your spiritual gift by:

  1.   Praying.  Ask God to help you discover your gift.  Ask Him to reveal to you how He wants you to be involved in His Kingdom work.  God will lead you and guide you.  It may take some time but the bible promises in the book of James 1:5 that “if any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”  God will not keep your gift a secret from you.  He may allow you to grow and mature before He places you into a position of service and authority, but He will not keep your gift a secret from you.  Because personal growth is involved, we need to:
  2. Study His Word.  As you read the bible and learn about the nature and character of God, you will learn about yourself.  As you learn the Word, you will better learn to hear God’s voice and He can more easily lead you and guide you in your life.
  3. Listen to your heart.  God will give you a passion for certain areas of service.  God will speak to your spirit and He will place certain callings on your life.  He will draw certain things out of you.
  4. Listen to Others.  Listen to your pastor, to your Sunday school teacher and others that God places in your path.  God will use other people to lead you and guide you as well.  Other people will recognize the gifts that God has given you.  I remember it was almost 20 years ago that I had rededicated my life to the Lord and finally began to faithfully attend church.    We had been attending regularly for several months and I was so happy that I was singing loud – loud enough that people noticed.  I even hit a few notes every now and then.  After one service, I was approached by somebody who said they needed someone to fill in for them the next Sunday.  In the choir I asked?  No, they practically shouted – which I thought was rather inappropriate.  “Not in the choir!  Heavens no!”  They needed somebody to help teach Sunday School…. and they thought that I would be good at it.  I had never thought about it before.  It never crossed my mind.  But I listened to someone else, someone who saw something in me.  I tried it and I was blessed beyond measure.  And God in His grace continued to grow and nurture that gift and a passion for it within me.  Which brings me to my last suggestion on discovering your spiritual gifts:
  5. Try some things!  Look around in your church, your community, your family and see what needs to be done.  Try some things, pray, listen to God, listen to others, and you may be surprised how God will use you.

Don’t ever think that God can’t use you.  History is full of people whom God used in a great way, people whom others rejected or looked down upon because of their past or because of their lack of qualifications.  The Apostle Simon Peter wanted us to know that God can use all of us.  Simon Peter was an uneducated fisherman.  He was rude, crude and socially unacceptable.  But Christ took him, taught him, and trained him.  Christ worked through Simon Peter and on the day of Pentecost, Simon Peter preached and through the power of the Holy Spirit led 3,000 people into the kingdom.

Just jump in and get busy, we have work to do!  The harvest is plentiful and there is work to be done in God’s Kingdom!

1 Peter 4:10  As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

When all of God’s children begin to use their gifts and put them to work in His Kingdom, many of the problems of this nation will be solved.  People will be delivered from their sin, people will be delivered from substance abuse, relationships will be mended, bodies will be healed and Christ will be glorified.

If you don’t know what your gift is ask the Lord.  If you already know, employ it in serving one another.  You will be blessed beyond measure!  Don’t worry about the results or the responses of others.  God will take care of that, God has your back.

Day 25 – Should Christians Take Medication?

It has been 25 days since my back surgery and I have not had any prescription pain medication for the last two days!  On a couple of occasions I have taken some Extra Strength Tylenol for some of the lingering pain in my right foot, but I have had no more Tylenol with Codeine or muscle relaxers in the last two days!  I am very excited about this as I feel it means that my body is making very good progress in the healing process.  One of my goals was to be able to get off of the prescription medication as quickly as possible.  Though I take daily medication to keep my migraines under control, I do my best to avoid most medications and try to keep as few drugs in my body as possible.

I am not opposed to medications from a religious point of view, as a matter of fact when I am asked; “Should Christians Take Medications” my response is that there is nothing wrong with taking the proper medications in a responsible manner which have been prescribed for you by your doctor.  God has ordained the use of doctors and medications.  Jesus talked about the use of doctors and never in the bible do you see anyone commanded not to seek medical attention from a physician or commanded not to make use of the proper medications in use in that day.  The Apostle Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 5:23

“No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.”

Wine was used to help eliminate some of the impurities found in the water of that day and it was also used for medicinal purposes.  Paul was instructing Timothy to use this natural remedy to help with the ailments that Timothy was experiencing.  Would Paul also want Timothy to pray?  Certainly!  Paul was the one who said we are to “pray without ceasing”!  But Paul also wanted Timothy to make use of the other remedies that God made available as well.  The bible says in Psalm 24:1

“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof…”

Many of our medicines come from the flowers, trees and herbs that the Lord has placed on this earth.  Much of our healing comes through the hands of doctors, men and women whom the Lord has blessed with a good education and great skills.  Christians should not hesitate to make proper use of properly prescribed medication or to submit themselves to the care of a good physician.  Most importantly though, while in the midst of the healing process, one needs to remember to pray and to submit oneself to the Great Physician.  For even though you  may have an earthly doctor,  all healing comes from our Lord.  It is God who has your back.

Day 24 – Patients and Patience, What the Doctor Said

When we arrived at the doctor’s office yesterday for my follow up visit about 3 weeks after my back surgery, the parking lot was packed.  It was the same way in the waiting room.  My wife Marta had taken the day off so that she could drive me to the appointment for a couple of reasons.  First, one of my restrictions following the surgery was that I was not supposed to drive.  Between taking pain medications and muscle relaxers which can make you drowsy and the difficulty that nerve irritation can have on some people’s ability to feel and manipulate their feet adequately, NO DRIVING is a common restriction for a few weeks following back surgery.  The second reason she wanted to go was to hear everything the doctor told me.  I have been to doctors before and apparently omitted “pertinent” information when reporting back to my spouse.  Marta also wanted to divulge to the doctor an unconfirmed report that one day when I was left alone I had swept our entire house (which has tile floors throughout) using a Swiffer Max broom.  This report has neither been confirmed nor denied and no reliable photos or other evidence have yet surfaced to sustain the accusation.

We arrived for the 10:45 am appointment at 10:30 am.  We were finally called back about five minutes past noon!  Many years ago this would have bothered me greatly and I would have felt the need to let somebody know exactly how I felt and maybe even given them a piece of my mind.  Through the years I have learned a couple of things.  One, I cannot afford to lose any more of my mind.   I need to hang on to every piece I have, so I no longer give a piece of it away so freely, especially when it only involves me having to wait.  This doctor’s office has never had problems with making me wait before, as a matter of fact, I usually get in early and the receptionist did indicate they were running behind and stated they would get to us as quickly as possible.  So what happened on this day?  I don’t know.  Maybe they had overbooked for the day or maybe there were some special cases which required extended time and attention from the doctor.  Maybe some people were having hard times dealing with the emotional issues of learning that they would have to endure yet another surgery.  Maybe someone had been in a car wreck in the early morning hours and the doctor had been in an emergency surgery.  I don’t know what had occurred.  But I do know this.  I was okay.  I was waiting with my wife.  We had time together; time to plan our lunch, time to plan our day and time to laugh about what a memorable anniversary day this would be compared to the other 25 we had experienced before.

We ended up having a good report with the doctor.  He reviewed some new X-rays and said things looked great.  (The screws and rods were much bigger than I imagined them to be!)  The doctor told me to do even less than I had been doing and not to worry about my walking chart for the next 2 months so that the sciatic nerve pain would go away completely.  I was given the okay to take some occasional “strolls” but not to go on my 4 times a day walks for exercise.  In essence, he told me to take it easy and come back and see him in 2 months.  I received permission to drive and a note to go back to work in a couple of weeks.  It was a good appointment, even though we had to wait.

When it comes to unexpected delays and waiting, I think of something I heard an older man say in Sunday school class about 20 years ago that changed my perspective.  “Some people get all upset about that flat tire on their car.  They jump up and down and yell because now they are going to be late for work or late for some other event.  But what they don’t know is that by taking the time to change that tire, the Good Lord helped them avoid being in a wreck on the highway.  You may not know the reason for the delay, you just have to know that you are in God’s Hands.”

Whenever I become anxious about how long something is taking I remember what that man said.  I also remember what King David said in Psalm 94:19

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.    Psalm 94:19

Don’t let delays get you down.  Trust in God, place yourself in His Hands.  Stay focused, stay positive and know that God has your back.

Day 23 – Milestones; Checking in with the Physician

Last night I only woke up two times – yay!  When I did I was able to fall back to sleep within 20 minutes or so, unlike yesterday  when I had napped too much the evening before and as a result ended up watching infomercials between 3:00 and 4:00 am.  I have seen a lot of late night TV in the last 3 weeks.  Want to know how to grow luxurious flowing hair on a bald head or lose 10 pounds in 10 days?  I’m your man!  But you better catch me quick because that info is fading fast as I am slowing but surely getting back into my regular sleep patterns.

Today I am preparing to go to the doctor’s office for the first follow up since the fusing of my L4 and L5 vertebrae.  We will review X-rays of my back taken before and after the surgery to determine the success and to get an idea of how well the bone graft is taking on the metal cage that has replaced the disc.  We will also talk about the lingering (but lessening!) sciatic nerve pain in my right leg which has now centered in my foot, review my chart tracking my walking times and medications, and discuss my prognosis which includes my return to work.  While those are very important and memorable events to take place today, those are not the most important event of the day for me.

Today my wife Marta and I celebrate 26 years of marriage!  The Lord has blessed us through those years.  We met and were married only 4 months later.  And though I would not recommend such a short engagement for others I must say it has worked out very well for us.  The bible tells men that we are to love our wives “as Christ loved the Church”.  My wife has made that easy.  She has been a wonderful wife, mother, friend, helper,  and soul mate throughout the years.  There have been times that were rough and times that were difficult but the Lord helped us to pull through those difficult times as a couple.  In the times when I am weak, frustrated, or so consumed with some task or project that I lose sight of the big picture she is strong and offers words of wisdom to help me reshape my focus.  In times when she is tired or feeling down, the Lord has blessed me to be able to encourage her and remind her of just how special she is.  My wife has been such a blessing to me.

As I check in with the physician today, I also want to be sure to check in with the Great Physician and let Him know how grateful I am for the last 26 years.  God has blessed me with a good wife and a good marriage.  I pray that the Lord will bless all the current marriages and the marriages to come in my family, in our congregation and amongst my friends.  I know that God will bless those marriages as couples commit themselves unto Him and commit themselves to love one another in a godly way in the easy times and hard times.  If you bring God into your marriage, you can rest assured that God has your back.

Day 21 – Paying It Forward

Last night I was finally able to sleep in longer than 1 and 2 hour increments.  Even though I still woke up twice between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am it was the best night of sleep I have had since the surgery to fuse my L4 and L5 vertebrae.  Since my surgery, I now have a much better understanding of how important a good night’s sleep is.  I already knew how important a good night’s sleep is, but now that I have been through the last 3 weeks and experienced waking up every hour or so each night I have a greater appreciation for rest and will not take it for granted again.  Though I am grateful that the pain in my legs is subsiding and that I am now better able to rest at night, I am also grateful for the experience that I have been through.  I know that the next time I speak to someone who is having difficulty with pain or problems that prevent them from sleeping I will better be able to sympathize with them, comfort them and passionately pray for them to have some rest.  It reminds me of what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

2 Cor 1:3  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

The Lord has blessed me and comforted me even during the midnight hours when I could not sleep and when my body has ached.  The Lord has ministered to me, assured me of His presence and faithfulness and He has provided me with opportunities to pray for others in need.  I know that He will use this experience to allow me to share His Grace and His Comfort.  I know that He will use this experience to allow me to better connect with someone going through a similar experience.  I am grateful for that opportunity and look forward to be able to be His servant in that capacity.  I look forward to be able to speak of His Grace, His Mercy, His Comfort, His Faithfulness and to pay it forward.  I look forward to lovingly share with others that God is good, and they can rest assured that while they recover God has their back.

Day 18 – How to Relieve the Sciatic Pain following Surgery

Last night was a better night; I was able to rest!  I still woke up every 1.5 to 2 hours but at least I was not watching the clock waiting until I could take another pain pill.  I took some pain medication at 10:30 pm and did not need any more until 5:30 am.  I had some good success in mitigating the sciatic nerve pain that I had been experiencing following the fusion of my L4 and L5 vertebrae two and a half weeks ago and I would like to share what I believe are the reasons for the success.

  1.  The use of a Heating Pad.
  2. A Contour Sleep Lumbar Pad from “Relax the Back” store.
  3. Cut back on physical activity during the day.
  4. Continued prayer.

My wife picked up the Contour Sleep Lumbar Pad at the Relax the Back store for me and it made a great deal of difference in my ability to get comfortable in bed.  It allowed me to sleep on my side or on my back without my incision hurting as much and also helped with the sciatic nerve pain.

In my lay person’s opinion, I think that the key to reducing the sciatic nerve pain is getting the muscles in the hip area to relax as much as possible and to get the inflammation to decrease.  As one cannot take ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs during recovery from back surgery as they hinder the bone graft procedure, a heating pad is a must have.  The heating pad helps with the circulation, loosens the muscles and reduces the inflammation to that area.

I called my doctor’s office and discussed the pain I was having the previous 5 nights and my inability to sleep.  The Physician’s Assistant stated that even though the nerve pain was not present the first week I was home, there had probably been a cumulative effect of the healing process and my increasing my walking from a total of 45 minutes a day to 55 minutes per day.  She asked me to cut back to about 30 minutes per day for a few days to allow my body to rest.  I will do so because one of my main goals is to FOLLOW DOCTOR’S ORDERS.   This will allow for the best outcome.

And the fourth ingredient in the mix for the better night of sleep is of course, prayer.  Thanks to all my friends and family who are praying for me. I truly believe you have helped me to have a better night’s sleep.  Keep praying for me not to overdo it and to continue to follow doctor’s orders.  The Lord is good, He hears our prayers and He answers them.  Our God has our back.

Day 16 – Sciatic Nerve hurts at night following my Spinal fusion

Last night was another one of those nights spent waking every hour and a half watching the clock, waiting for sleep and willing the time forward so that I could take another pain pill.  My sciatic nerve is inflamed due to the work done in fusing the L4 and L5 vertebrae together.  My understanding is that this can be expected for several weeks.   It is odd that it does not bother me much during the day, just at night when I am trying to sleep.

Just yesterday I received an email from a longtime friend who shared with me his experience during back surgery several years ago.  He too had a hard time sleeping at night too even though the day time was not that bad.  His words, though realistic, were encouraging in a “this too shall pass” manner.  He praised his oldest daughter for being such a good caregiver during his recovery and he reflected on what a meaningful time it was for him in regards to praying for others even in the midst of his own pain and struggles.

It is always good to hear someone else’s perspective and to know that your experience is not unique.  Let me be quick to add that if you are experiencing some unusual pain that your doctor has not prepared you for, please contact your physician.  Don’t rely on a blog to be your medical consultant as to what you can or should endure.  Do however rely on your friends and new acquaintances to help you through the peaks and valleys that you will encounter on your journey.  The bible reminds us in Galatians 6:2

Bare one another’s burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

It is so encouraging to know as we walk through the recovery process that we are not blazing a trail, others have gone before us and the Lord has led them through it.  You can make it too.  God has your back.

Day 15 – What are your goals?

Last night was a long night.  I ended up watching the clock waiting until I could take some medication to relieve the pain in my back and right leg.  I believe that the pain was caused by my tossing and turning in bed.  I was fine when I went to bed and I had not walked or been involved in any other activity for the 3 hours prior to bedtime so I guess that must be what happened. I have spent most of the nights sleeping in a chair in the living room that reclines like a hospital bed.  It has a firm but padded back, keeps me from tossing and turning and has the added benefit of having a dachshund sleep by my side so that I have a perpetual heating pad.  (NOTE: I do not pick up the dog!  The chair is next to the couch and the dog walks across the couch and the end table to get to the chair.  I know, it’s sick, but still within the protocol following Spinal Fusion surgery.)

My goal is to fully follow my doctor’s orders (and to get a good night sleep) so that I have the best outcome possible.  For me, an avid runner, this means no exercise other than walking for the next 6 – 8 months.  It also means not picking up my granddaughter.  It means not pulling weeds in the yard.  It means not doing a lot of things…things that I must sacrifice in order to meet my goals and fulfill the plans that the Lord has for my life.  I want to be able to walk at Disney with my wife, kids and grandkids without lagging behind due to a bad back.  I want to be able to pick up and hold my grandkids and someday my great grandkids.  I want to be able to stand up and preach and walk and move around as the Lord directs for many years to come  Those are some of my goals.

What are your goals?  To what do you aspire?  What dreams do you dream?  There will be sacrifice and commitment involved.  But know this, if the Lord has placed those dreams and aspirations in your heart the commitment and sacrifice will be worth it!  Anything the Lord wants you to do, He will help you to do!  Oh and He does have things for you to do!  The bible says in Jeremiah 29:11

‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

The Lord has glorious plans and a future for each of us.  So I ask again, to what do you aspire?  What has the Lord laid upon your heart?  As my cousin told me one time, “The time will pass and you will either have done it or wish you’d done it.”  Don’t be left wishing you had fulfilled your dreams.  The bible promises in Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Delight yourself in the Lord today.  Discover the plans and goals that He has for your life and start your journey today.  Make a commitment today.  You can trust the Lord with your future, God has your back.

Day 14 – The Power of Positive Thinking?

I know that my overall progress will come slow and incrementally.  I know that there will be periods of time when I take two steps forward and one step back.  I think that it is important to try and stay positive not just during one’s recovery time but to stay positive at all times.  The bible says in Proverbs 23:7 “As a man thinks, so is he.”

With that said, I want to go on record stating that I have been blessed with the following milestones.

  1.  I have not had any chills in the last 4 days.  I had chills off and on during the first 4 days home home following my spinal fusion.  I guess it went with the low grade fever of 99.3 I was running compared to my usual 97.4.
  2. I have not had any nausea in the last 9 days.  I did have some heartburn the first day home but some Tums cleared that right up and I have not had to take any more since.
  3. The “old” groin injury aggravated by the prone position during the surgery is not bothering me anymore.  (Do they use restraints? The bruises on my legs and behind would suggest they do.  Don’t expect any photos.)
  4. Last night, even though I woke up every two hours, I did not take any pain medication between 9:30 pm and 4:00 am.
  5. I found a gardener to help during my recovery who works real cheap.

I think that my recovery is going well.  I am up to walking between 50 to 60 minutes total per day.  This occurs over the span of 4 short walks.  I don’t set any records for speed or agility but I am giving myself high marks for consistency and for meeting more of the neighbors.

I don’t think my good progress has been based so much on the “power of a positive attitude” as it has been based on the “power of a prayerful and praiseful” attitude.  David said in Psalm 103:2 – 4

Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion

As you travel on your journey, don’t forget to praise the Lord for each of the milestones along the way.    Praise Him also for pulling you through the setbacks.  Yes, praise the Lord through it all; stay prayerful, stay positive and remember, God has your back.

Day 13 – Why Should I Keep Going?

Last night was a rough night.  I think I overdid it yesterday.  My wife and I went out to eat and it was great to get out of the house – there is such a thing as cabin fever.  But I ended up sitting in some chairs that did not provide the same level of support and comfort as the ones I have at home and I think that is why I ached a little more during the night.  I ended up watching the clock at various times counting down the minutes until I expected the pain medication to take effect and then woke up a couple of hours later and counted down the time until I was scheduled to take another one.  I was not in excruciating pain, but the sciatic nerve was causing me some pain in my hip and down into my right hamstring.  I tried to take my mind off of my immediate circumstances by praying for my family and friends and thanking the Lord for the fact that I knew what I was experiencing would not last.  I knew that I could keep going.  I knew that I could depend on the promise found in Philippians 4:13 which says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

As I lay there meditating on God’s faithfulness, I reflected on the fact that there are others out there who are in some type of pain or distress who do not know that they can rely on God and that they can trust Him even in the midst of their tossing and turning at night.  So, if anyone is out there and their heart has ached and they have wondered, “Why should I keep going?  How can I keep going?” let me lovingly share some thoughts with you.

You should keep going because God loves you!  God loves you so much that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)   The Lord Almighty has expressed a love for you that is indescribable and uncontainable and He longs to pour it forth into your life through a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ.

You should keep going because Jesus Christ will help you overcome any obstacles you face.  The bible promises in Philippians 4:19

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Whatever you need, God shall supply it through His Son Christ.  Do you need strength?  You can have it!  Do you need wisdom?  He’s got it!  Patience?  No, problem!  Do you need to be able to make it through the next 20 minutes until your pain medication takes effect?  The Lord can get you there!  Whatever your need is, God will meet it through a relationship in Jesus Christ!  He meets our physical needs, our emotional needs, our mental needs, and greatest of all He meets our spiritual needs through the forgiveness of our sin.

“How can I keep going?” you ask.  You can keep going through the power, the presence and the person of Jesus Christ in your life.  You can keep going because God has your back.
