Taste and See!

Haley loves Cake

I came home from work today and my wife Marta shared a cute story with me. She had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with our youngest granddaughter Haley and they had a great time. We are very blessed because our granddaughters live just 3 houses away and we get to see them all the time. This afternoon Marta gave Haley who is almost 2 years old her first piece of carrot cake. She said that Haley would take a bite and smile and say, “Mmmmm.” When she asked Haley if it was good, Haley didn’t answer, she just took another bite and said, “Mmmmm.” That was how it went until Haley finished the cake; all she could do was take bite after bite and say, “Mmmmm.” As we laughed about how funny that was and how cute Haley is, it reminded us of how good God is and how much He has blessed us. The Bible says in Psalm 34:8

O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! Psalm 34:8

Oh my goodness Our God is good! He is better than any cake you have ever tried and anything you have ever experienced. He will comfort you, take care of you, meet your needs and leave you speechless. He will provide you with eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ, prepare for you a mansion in glory and bless you so abundantly that all you can do is sit there, smile like a two year old eating cake and say, “Mmmmm.” If you don’t know Him, you need to try Him. Go to Him today! Enter into an everlasting relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.

Raising Children Right

This week my oldest granddaughter started back to “school”. Avery is only three and a half and the program she attends is a mother’s day out program at a Hays Hills Baptist Church but to Avery it is school. I called it preschool once and my error was pointed out to me. ”Oh no Pawpaw, it’s school…real school.” I was so proud of her at “real school” this week because she volunteered to be the prayer leader for her class. It is such a blessing to see her and her little sister learning about the love of the Lord and learning the importance of prayer. As I was reflecting on this blessing I thought of the Lord’s words in Deuteronomy 6:4-7:

Deut 6:4 “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

This instruction from the Lord to His people was not just an instruction to parents; it was a privilege and an obligation given to the entire community. Everyone was to participate. The same privilege and obligation applies to Christians today. We are called to be a people of faith who encourage one another, love one another and help one another grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord. I am so grateful for the instruction and love my granddaughters are receiving from their parents, their church family and from other Christians in the community. Our God is so good!

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Someone Who Will Listen

It has been another busy week.  It seems like I have had the opportunity to speak with one upset person after another on the phone this week.   This afternoon I spoke to a man who wanted to provide me some feedback on the service he received from our department.  He was very agitated and started spouting off some things that I knew were not accurate as he was mixing up our department with another one on the other side of the country.  While he was satisfied overall with the service he received from our company, he just had to let someone know about those “little details” that bothered him.  I apologized for his inconvenience and let him know that I would be sure that those issues were addressed.  Before I could say anything else, he said, “Thanks for listening!  I just needed to get that off my chest.  Have a great day!” and then he was gone.  I bet I didn’t say more than 20 words to him before he ended the call.  He just wanted somebody to listen.

Have you ever just wanted somebody to listen and there was nobody around to talk to?  Have you ever been frustrated by wanting to share your burdens with someone and it seemed like nobody cared enough to let you tell your story?  If so, you need to remember that we can always tell our story to the Lord.  David said in Psalm 116:1-2

Psalm 116:1  I love the LORD, because He hears My voice and my supplications. 2  Because He has inclined His ear to me, Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.

David had a relationship with the Lord and David knew that he could call upon Him in times of distress and anxiety.  David knew he could trust that the Lord would always listen to his cares and concerns.  Do you know that anytime day or night you can call upon the Lord Jesus Christ?  Do you know that you can cast your cares, concerns, burdens and anxieties on Him?  You can.  You can trust that if you call upon the Lord He will hear your voice.  He will listen to you.  Jesus said, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”   Oh, I hope that you are taking all of your anxieties to Him.  He is the One who is always ready to listen.

Starting a New Ministry

I am having a great week.  This week I will finally have access to the community center trailer in the trailer/RV park located right behind our church.  The trailer belongs to Mobile Loaves and Fishes.  They use it as a gathering place and hold meetings and other functions there as they minister to some of the homeless people in the south Austin area.  They also allow the trailer/RV park to make use of the center for various community functions.  I was recently able to get permission from the president of their organization to use the trailer for an after school bible study one day per week.  I have seen this be very successful at a previous church I attended. God laid this ministry upon my heart one day as I was meditating on Acts 1:8.  In this passage Jesus meets His disciples in Jerusalem, tells them that they will be empowered by the Holy Spirit, and says, “you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

As I read that verse it struck me that there was a range or spectrum for missions and witnessing.   Their testimony should reach from Jerusalem, include the area of Judea and stretch all the way to the ends of the earth.  A disciple of Christ should be actively seeking in some way to reach people within the entire range of that spectrum.  Many churches and many people think of this verse just as they do the Great Commission.  They think of missions work in remote countries, unreached people groups who desperately need the gospel.  As a result, many churches and many Christians participate, pray and give greatly to those missions.  That deserves a big Hallelujah!  Souls are being added to the kingdom because of the prayer and attention given to foreign missions.  That is an awesome thing and I would never want to see that slow down; as a matter of fact, I think more can be done in that regard.  But as I read that verse several months ago, I was reminded that the Lord asked…no, told His disciples that they were to be witnesses in Jerusalem.  Jerusalem was their own backyard.  Sometimes as Christians we give to efforts that are far away and out of sight and don’t participate in things that are up close and personal.  Sometimes as Christians we even neglect the opportunity to share the good news with people that we interact with on a regular basis.

The Lord kept that verse on my heart and I asked Him to help me do a better job of witnessing in MY Jerusalem.  Over the past 6 months I have actively tried to do a better job of fulfilling all aspects of that verse; I have shared the good news and talked to more people in parking lots and grocery stores and I have taken more prayer requests from strangers than I have in years.  And during this time God has continually placed the community behind our church on my heart.  I know the task will not be easy but I know that if God has placed it on my heart He will use it in a good way.  I am not allowed to pass out flyers in the neighborhood or go door to door and advertise the after school bible study.  I may have to stand on the corner of the lot and pass out gospel cookies for awhile to get the word out, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”  Pray for me.  I know the Lord will give me wisdom; He promises to do so in His word.

Keeping Promises

It has been a busy couple of weeks at work and I decided to take this Friday off.  I decided to take the day off not because it has been so busy but because of what my oldest granddaughter Avery said to me last week.  Avery lives just down the street and she was visiting one night and she told her mom, “Pawpaw is going to take me to Cabela’s.”  Cabela’s is a large retailer of hunting, fishing and camping gear and they have an awesome aquarium that Avery loves.  I don’t know where she got the idea that I was going to take her so I asked her what she was talking about.  She stuck to her story and said, “Remember Pawpaw, you promised you would take me.  You can take me tonight.”  At that point I assured her that we would go real soon.  I have to admit that I don’t ever remember making that original promise.  Maybe she was talking about all the neat stuff there one time and I made an offhand remark like, “We’ll have to go there sometime.”  I don’t know what she heard but I do know what we are doing tomorrow.  We are going to Cabela’s!  Avery is going to get to look at the fish and see all the other things that fascinate her in that store.  Pawpaw is going to keep that promise.

All this talk about making promises, remembering promises and keeping promises makes me thankful that we serve a God who is faithful to keep His promises.  Our Lord never does or says anything offhand; nothing ever escapes His memory and He never fails to keep His promises.  Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 5:24

Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.  1Thess 5:24

As special as it is to keep a promise to a granddaughter and go on a special outing together, the Lord has made us some even grander promises in His word.  He promises that whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Rom 10:13).  He promises that those who are weary can come to Him and they shall receive rest for their souls (Matt 11:29).  The Lord promises that He will never leave nor forsake His children (Heb 13:5).  Oh my goodness, the Lord has made some awesome promises!  He will not forget them and He shall bring them to pass!  Learn His promises and lean on His faithfulness!  You will not be disappointed.

What is a Lithotripsy?

I had a lithotripsy procedure about three weeks ago to break up a kidney stone.  I have had about 15 kidney stones in the past 7 years and but have never had this procedure before.  I did have the experience of having one stuck halfway between my kidney and my bladder one time for about 2 weeks before I went to the doctor.  The doctor had to go in there after that one and I can tell you that is a procedure that no man wants to participate in.  You are very sore after that procedure and it takes several days for the pain to begin to subside.  The lithotripsy is designed to help avoid THAT procedure which is why I was eager to sign up for it.  The doctor explained that he would use shock waves to break up the 7-8 millimeter stone in my left kidney which he was afraid would not pass on his own.  Those shock waves would reduce the stone to smaller fragments that would easily pass and the stone would be completely gone in 5-6 weeks.

I scheduled the procedure and showed up at the hospital at 10 am and I left at 2:30 pm.  They did use anesthesia to knock me out and I was okay with that.  They say that with the shock waves that are used they don’t want you jumping around because the waves could damage an internal organ and that’s not good.  Some gel pack is placed over your abdomen and the shock waves are administered with a hand held device as the doctor monitors the progress.  When I got home I could see a slightly pink round circle on my side that looked like a small rash or abrasion.  It really did not hurt.  My next instruction was to strain my urine whenever I went to the restroom and check for particles of the stone.  The doctors test these to see what they are made of and devise the appropriate plan/diet to keep you from making more.

As I checked for those fragments each time I went to the restroom I just saw dust the first couple of days.  Cool!  They smashed that stone to smithereens I thought!  Not so much.  The second week following the lithotripsy I got a familiar poke in my side.  It was that early warning sign that a stone is about to make its journey from your kidney to your bladder.  If you have ever had a kidney stone you know the feeling.  And if you have ever had a kidney stone you probably keep your briefcase or your purse stocked with a couple of pain pills and some nausea medicine just in case you ever feel that twinge again.  It ain’t no joke when you feel that poke.  This time that poke did not escalate.  There was no onset of clamminess, cramps, headache or nausea.  A few hours and a couple of glasses of water later a decent size fragment had left my body with relatively little inconvenience.

The last couple of weeks though I have had some pretty good size fragments make that journey.  The process was not as quick or easy as I had hoped.  I had a couple of nights where I tossed and turned and finally after 2-3 days passed a fragment that was 2-3 millimeters in size.  I took some pain pills in those instances.  All in all the lithotripsy has not been that bad.  None of the individual fragments I have passed have been as bad as the other stones I have had in the past.  I feel blessed in that regard.  And though it has not been as easy as I expected I have to remember that the doctor did tell me that it would take some time and he did not promise me it would be painless.  I know that ultimately I will be rid of this stone and with the right diet changes and right changes in behavior – like drinking more water, I will be less likely to make these stones.  My doctor has a good plan for me, I just need to trust him and follow doctor’s orders.  The whole situation reminds me of what Paul says in Philippians 1:6

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.  Philippians 1:6

There are things that the Lord desires to do in and through all of us.  Oftentimes when we come to Him we have some issues that need to be dealt with.  Sometimes the Lord affects some changes instantaneously.  Sometimes He works slowly and deliberately.  I think He works that way so that we can better learn to lean on Him, trust in Him and walk with Him day to day.  Some issues are hard for us to let go of.  They have been with us for so long and so problematic for so long that they take some time to work through.  Some problems have to be broken up into small manageable portions for us to be able to tackle them.  If we submit ourselves to the Lord, follow His instructions for our lives and make the behavior changes that He prescribes for us, our Great Physician can affect some wondrous outcomes in our lives.  Sometimes things may be a little more painful that we want or expect, but He knows best and He can be trusted.  He who began a good work in you will complete it and perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

More than Surviving

I am getting ready to attend RA/GA camp this week.  This camp only lasts 2.5 days as opposed to the 5 days that the previous camp lasted.  That week-long camp was fun but it was a bit challenging.  At the end of camp many of the adult sponsors were saying things like, “We survived!”  Though camp was a blessing, it was tiring.  I am looking forward to this camp that only runs from Thursday to Saturday.  It is nice to get outdoors and be out at the lake even if it is 150 degrees outside.  It teaches you good survival skills.  You learn things like – where all the water coolers are, which air conditioned buildings are unlocked during the day, and how fast you can drink a root bear slushie without getting a brain freeze.  I feel like survivor man with all the skills I am picking up at camp.

Speaking of surviving, I have been watching a new show called “Get Out Alive” with Bear Grylls.  In that show there are couples that have been taken to remote locations and together they all have to survive in the wilderness.  Bear gives them some tasks to do and shows them some things that will help them along the way and then leaves them on their own.  It is a typical survivor show because at the end of every episode somebody is booted off the show.  Somebody is judge unworthy because they are unable to make fire, can’t navigate through the forest well, or won’t eat worms and Bear who has been watching from a distance decides that they don’t measure up and they have to go.

I am so glad that our life does not have to be like some episode of Get out Alive.  I am so glad that we have a Lord who is willing to show us the ropes and who doesn’t then disappear off into the woods and leave us all alone.  Our Lord is present with us in the midst of all our situations; He promises to never leave us nor forsake us.  I am so glad that when we call upon the Lord and receive salvation and enter His kingdom we don’t have to worry about being judged and found unworthy and asked to leave.  We never get voted off the island because we made a mistake and let somebody down.

We are so blessed to serve a Lord who helps us do more than just survive.  We serve a Lord who is willing to help us to live and thrive.  We serve a Lord who says in John 10:10, “I came that you may have life and have it abundantly.”  An abundant life is available to those who trust in the Lord and who walk in faith.

Please pray for us as we go to camp; pray that someone will come to know the abundant life only offered through Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for Our Troops

This week a friend of mine was deployed to Afghanistan.  Our church has been in prayer for him, his wife and son.  This prayer is lifted up for all those who serve our country.   May the Lord bless them all.

A Prayer for our Troops

Thank you Lord for those who serve,
Who help protect this land.
Be with them and keep them safe
Hold them in Your mighty Hand.
Give them the strength and wisdom
To do what they must do.
Watch over them and keep them safe
Until their job is through.

And don’t forget their families Lord,
They also need your touch.
Things at home just aren’t the same
When there are loved ones you miss so much.
So we pray for our soldiers Lord,
Bless these women and men;
Be with them wherever they go
And bring them home safe again.

The Yard is Dry and I Need Some Water

It has been a very busy week.  I have been playing catch up at work after being out last week.  I am just about dug out and believe me I am ready for the weekend.  I have some tasks at home that will need to be done as well.  As they say, no rest for the weary.  Speaking of weary, the grass in my yard is looking a little bit weary too.  I have a sprinkler system but there are a couple of spots that don’t receive the same amount of coverage as the rest of the yard because the sprinkler heads just don’t hit it those areas as well.  The contractor who put it in just did not meet my expectations but that is a story for another day.  Anyway, a new neighbor who was moving in last week ran over part of the yard with a large moving truck a few times.  I didn’t see it happen but I saw the evidence.  There were tire marks on the drive way leading into the yard and the truck was still parked across the street.  I ran the sprinkler system through its various stages to make sure the heads were okay (they were) and I visited with the neighbor to make sure that he avoided my yard on the rest of his trips to unload the rest of his belongings in his new house (he did) – and yes, I was very nice about it, thank you Jesus.  I really can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

Long story short, I neglected to turn the sprinkler system back on when I was done so that it would run automatically on the days that I am allowed to water my yard.  The sprinklers had been turned off for over 10 days before I discovered the problem.  No wonder the yard has been looking weary and parched.  The grass had not been receiving what it needs to survive and make it through the long, hot drought we have been going through in Texas.  I know that spiritually speaking I have gone through similar droughts.  There have been times when I have been weary and tired and my soul has been parched.  There have been times I have not provided myself with what I need to get through the seasons of challenges and times of trials that I face.  But the truth is that refreshment and revival is readily available to all of us.  The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:7

Jer 17:7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. 8 For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.”

Maybe you are going through a tough time now.  Maybe your soul is weary and tired and your spirit feels as parched as a lawn in the hot Texas sun.  Maybe you should ask yourself what you might be neglecting.  Have you shut down your time with the Lord or the time you spend in the Word like I shut down that sprinkler system?  Have you failed to lean on Him and look to Him?  If so, you can be refreshed.  You can be revived.  You can place your trust in the Lord, let Him meet your needs and not be anxious during this time of drought.  The Lord can and will minister to you.  Jesus said in John 7:38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'”  That is an awesome promise from our Savior.  He will revive you.  He will refresh you.  He will soothe your spirit like cool water on a hot Texas lawn if you place your faith and trust in Him.

Train Up a Child

Proverbs 22:6  “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Last Sunday I asked the congregation to be praying for all of the children and young people associated with our church and within our circle of friends and families.  Perhaps some of you have been meditating on this verse as you have prayed for them.  This verse is good for such an occasion.  I would like to mention a couple of caveats about this verse.  We limit the truth found in this verse if we only think of it as a verse that speaks to the relationship between a mom, dad and their children.  We also minimize the scope and power of this verse if we believe that mom and dad bear the sole responsibility when it comes to having a godly influence on the children in our community.

We must keep in mind that not every family looks the same.  Why even the families within our own church are unique in their own ways and each and every one of them are loved by God.  We must also keep in mind that during the course of a lifetime there are many people God uses to impact and influence our children.  Grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, teachers, even people met in passing can make an impact on all of us in our lives.  As you continue to pray this week please pray that the influence made by all those who impact our children will be a godly one.  Please pray that those who are raising up children in difficult circumstances will be strengthened.   And please pray that the Lord will lead each of us to be godly influences on the children that He sends into our lives or who He allows to cross our paths.
