That You May Know

I have been taking a couple of classes this spring and the term is coming to an end and so far I have a 95 average in one class and a 96 average in another class.  To get an A I need to have an average of 94 or higher – so I am cutting it close.  I turned in two long papers last week and took two tests yesterday and now I just have to wait for them to be graded to see how I stand.  Even though I will be all right if I make a B, I really want to make an A.  I just hate having to wait to see if I make the grade.  There are many times in life when we have anxiety and doubt and just do not know exactly where we stand.

As I ponder that thought I am reminded that we can always know where we stand in Christ.  In his first epistle to the church, the Apostle John writes

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”   1 John 5:13

John was writing in response to false teachers who were making others anxious by teaching false doctrine.  They were stating that Jesus was not the Messiah and that salvation was based on things other than faith in Christ.  This was really troubling people who were depending on Christ to reconcile them unto God.  “If Christ is not the Messiah, then He cannot forgive me.  If I am not forgiven, then I cannot have eternal life!”  Those were the thoughts tormenting the believers in the early church.

John wanted his brothers and sisters to know that they could be certain of where they stood.  If they were in a relationship with Christ they had assurance of salvation, they could know without a doubt that they had eternal life.  We can have that same confidence!

How awesome it is to be able to know where we stand!  How awesome it is to know that because of Christ we are forgiven, we are reconciled unto God.  We are able to make the grade!

I hope that you walk in the assurance of your faith today.  I hope that you know that the Lord loves you and that in Christ you have eternal life!  Until next time, stay strong and keep the faith.

He’s Always There

     Yesterday upon the stair,

     I met a man who wasn’t there,

     He wasn’t there again today,

Oh how I wish he’d go away.

I remember my grandfather reciting this poem a long time ago when I was just a little boy.  I used to think it was clever but I never realized the depth of truth found in this little rhyme.  So many times it seems like we are worried about something that is not there, just like this individual in the poem.  We spend time tossing and turning worrying about what may happen next and what we may encounter in the days to come.  Many times we are worrying about nothing.  Jesus said in Matthew 6:27

“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?”  Matt 6:27

Many times we imagine the worst and it never happens.  We may ultimately be relieved but when we look back we see that we have been in a state of anxiety and worry for several days –  and all of it was unnecessary.  Worry gets us nowhere.  It does not grow our faith and does not present a good witness in this world.  In that same chapter in Matthew, Jesus promises that our Heavenly Father knows our needs and can always be trusted to meet our needs.  As I think about that poem that my grandfather used to recite, I would like to offer a different version.

     Yesterday I was in despair,

Then I met someone Who always cares,

Jesus meets my needs every day,

I’m so glad He came my way.

Praying for Counsel and Courage

This past week I must have had my counseling hat on.  I talked to four different people about decisions and plans they are currently making which will impact them for the next several years.  The discussions covered various areas like education, jobs, relationships and deciphering God’s spiritual calling in one’s life.  In all of these situations, prayer and the willingness to listen to godly counsel is the key.  We must seek direction from the Lord if we want to be sure that we are on the right path.  The Bible says in Proverbs 19:21:

“Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand.” Proverbs 19:21

We should pray for counsel.  We can trust the Lord to give us wisdom.  There may be times when we need to seek out guidance from others who know Him and who can help us discern His voice and His direction but we must never doubt that the answer comes from the Lord.

There have been times when I have prayed and I have not felt led in any particular direction on a matter and the wisdom from a Christian friend has helped me to gain clarity.  There have been other times when I have simply asked the Lord to help me to know what to do by “closing certain doors” if I am not to walk through them.  “Lord, this job seems like a good match and I am not certain if I should take it.  Please impress upon my heart what I should do.  And Lord if I am not to be there, please close that door.”

I have found that the Lord is often faithful to answer that prayer.  I have found that the Lord can be trusted to open and close doors for us if we ask Him too.  I have also found that sometimes we can tend to pry open “closed doors” and walk where He has not sent us.  in the same way, we can also hesitate and avoid stepping through doors that he has opened for us.  Both of these situations cause us to step outside of His will and miss out on His best for us.

I have found that as we pray for counsel we must also pray for courage.  It takes courage sometimes to go where we must go or to stay where we must stay.  Fortunately for us, wherever the Lord leads us, we can expect His presence to be there as well.

I pray that you will have a glorious week.  I pray that you will receive counsel from the Lord and the courage to do His will.  I pray that you will know He is with you – when doors are opened and when they are closed.

Are You Weary?

Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”

This past weekend was one that was emotionally and physically draining for several people I know.  I was ministering to a family that was preparing for a funeral service when out of the blue tragedy struck.  One of the family members who was greatly involved in the planning of the service passed away in an accident just a few hours before the service.  Naturally the siblings were shell-shocked.  Loss upon loss and tragedy upon tragedy had come into their lives.  There were so many questions and so few answers.  It was a tough time indeed.  As I shared the news with the family, we leaned together on God’s word and His faithfulness.  We acknowledged that we will trust Him to get us through this situation.  I don’t know how anyone could face such a situation without Jesus.  He says to all who face difficult situations,

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”  Matthew 11:28 – 29

The family and I went straight to Him, we gave Him our burden and we leaned on Him and not on our own understanding.  We asked Him to strengthen us, to comfort us and to help us lean on our faith.  Many prayers will continue to be needed in the upcoming months.  More trials and tribulations may be on their way as the family deals with some of the questions and doubts that arise in the aftermath of a tragic accident.  But through it all I know that they can depend upon the Lord to lead them through it and provide them rest so that they will have the strength to go on.

When is it too late?

Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.  2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.  3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”  4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.

One of the things I love about Bible stories is that they are true.  Historical narrative is found in God’s word.  God used men through the power of the Holy Spirit to record things for us just as they occurred.  God records the frustrations and the temper of Moses.  He records the sins of David.  He records the denials of Simon Peter.  God records the good, the bad and the ugly.  In this passage we see some good things.  We see some ladies who are faithful.  They have been traumatized by the gruesome death of Christ on the cross, someone they have loved and cherished.  Christ died on the cross on the Friday, just before the beginning of the Sabbath day and because of their faith these ladies basically had to sit at home all day Saturday.  Now it is Sunday morning and God has laid it upon their heart to go and anoint the body of Christ with spices.  In those days when someone died before they placed them in the tomb, the custom was to anoint their body with spices.  It was an embalming type of process.  Three days have passed and Christ has already been placed in the tomb.  For most people it would seem like the opportunity to anoint the body had passed.  The body would already beginning to decompose and much like the situation mentioned of Lazarus after three days in the grave, “By now he stinketh.”  Yes, most would have said it was too late to go and anoint the body of Christ.  But we need to know that if God places something on our hearts, it is never too late.  It is never too late to say you’re sorry even though months or years may have passed, it is never too late to go back to school (even if you’re older than the teacher), it is never too late to do something IF God is calling you to do it!

Because God has laid it on their heart and because it is the right thing to do, they go even though it is the third day and even though Christ has already been placed in the tomb.  As they go, they realize that an obstacle is in their path; a stone has been placed over the opening to the tomb.  They know they cannot remove the stone by themselves.  I am sure they probably heard about the guards through the grapevine and they know the Roman guards would not help them.  All seems lost.  There are so many obstacles and uncertainties present on that morning.  They are not sure of how they will anoint His body, they are just sure that it is the right thing to do and they keep on going.  They expect God to make a way.

I have to tell you that I know a bunch of people who would have turned around when they realized that a stone was in the way.  Worse than that, I know a bunch of people who would have wanted to do the right thing but who would have never bought the spices and never started the trip.  I know so many people who when faced with obstacles and uncertainty would not have found the hope or the strength to keep going on!  Perhaps today you find yourself in the midst of some uncertainty.  Perhaps there are obstacles you face which seem as insurmountable as this large gravestone seemed to these ladies.  Perhaps there is some great opposition standing between you and what you must do, barriers between where you are and where you must go, obstacles that you have no idea how they will be removed.

I want you to know that if God has placed a mission, a journey or a task upon your heart, God will give you the strength to keep going on!  Don’t give up and don’t give in!  Keep going on!  Expect God to make a way and you will be blessed for your faith!  These ladies got up and they were the first to hear about the Risen Lord!  And they were the first to get to share the glorious Good News!  Jesus lives!  They expected God to make and way and the Lord blessed them over and above their expectations.  Paul praises the Lord for this quality in Ephesians 3:20 saying:

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.”

We serve a God who removes obstacles.  We serve a God who gives us the strength to keep going on!  We serve a God who blesses us in ways we can never imagine!  Get up, get moving, it is not too late!  Hang in there when it gets tough or when obstacles arise!  Keep going and to God be the glory, Amen!

Which Way Will You Go? Will You Listen?

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.”  Proverbs 12:15

There was a young man moving away and going to off to college.  An older friend of his took him aside and told him about what he could expect.  He told him about some of the people he would meet and how not everybody would have the same goals and ambitions.  He told him that some would profess the same goals and ambitions but they would get distracted and knocked off course by some of the pitfalls and problems of college life.  He told the young man what to expect and asked him not to go off course like so many others.  The young man thanked his older, wiser friend and headed off to school.  Just one year later, he had gone from being an “A” student to being on scholastic probation.  I am pleased to say the story has a happy ending.  Ultimately the Lord introduced the young man to a good woman and the Lord used her to help the young man get back on track.  I graduated 5 years later on the dean’s list.

I heard what my older friend said but I did not listen.  “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.”  Sometimes we treat the Lord that way.  Sometimes we wait and wait for Him to speak and when He does, we listen respectfully but many times we don’t act on what He says, we ignore Him and forge ahead and do what pleases us rather than what would please Him.  Let’s face it, most of the time we just don’t listen.

If you haven’t heard from the Lord yet on some issue, keep your life lined up with His will and His word and just keep praying.  And when He does speak to you follow His instructions.  At the right time He will tell you all that you need to know.  There are many things in this life that we don’t understand.  Some things are on a need to know basis.  Some things we won’t understand until much later in this life, but when you need instruction; when you need wisdom, the Lord is willing to provide it.  The Bible says in James 1:5

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”  James 1:5

It is not a question of if God will give us instruction; it is a question of whether or not we will RECEIVE His instruction.  Keep asking, keep seeking and answers will be provided unto you.  Then the only question that remains is whether or not you will follow the instructions you’ve been given.

Feeding the Flock

“I will feed My flock and I will lead them to rest,” declares the Lord GOD.  Eze. 34:15

On Sunday my daughter and her family came over.  I ended up babysitting the two year old while everybody else went shopping.  We had a good time.  Most of it was spent on the back porch drawing with chalk and then watering the plants.  I won’t be surprised if some of those plants drown as much water as Avery put on them.

Avery is talking more and more every time I see her.  She is quite a blessing and she loves to help.  After we watered the plants and caused our town to escalate to a whole new critical stage in the “Drought Alert” we turned our attention to the bird feeder.  We have a bird feeder in the back yard and last summer there were a whole host of finches, chick-a-dees, doves and other birds that would come around to partake of the food.  During the winter time when it became cold and I did not spend so much time outside I was not as diligent about putting bird seed in the feeder.  As a result the birds began to wander off and seek out provision somewhere else.

But this weekend I had my helper with me and Avery and I filled up the feeder again with bird seed.  Today I noticed a few finches coming back.  My experience with that bird feeder (and my lack of consistency in supplying provision) has made me appreciate God’s faithfulness even more.  God promises to take care of His People throughout His Word.  He says in Ezekiel 34:15

“I will feed My flock and I will lead them to rest,” declares the Lord GOD.  Eze. 34:15

The Lord promises us a faithful Shepherd who will never leave us nor forsake us.  He promises to always meet our needs and to feed us with His word.  There is no need for us to seek provision from anywhere else.  In John chapter 6 many superficial followers began to leave Jesus and Jesus asked the disciples if they planned on leaving too.  Peter said in John 6:68,”Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.”  The Lord always offers us all the provision we need; He offers us words of eternal life.  His words are always available.  His comfort and provision are in abundant supply.

Where can I go from Your Presence?

“…Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” Psalm 139:7

One year since my back surgery and I am doing great!  Even shopping doesn’t bother my back.  This past weekend my wife and I took our daughter and our two granddaughters shopping for Easter dresses.  We had a great time.  I was able to carry the two year old anytime she got tired without worrying about it causing my back to lock up or without fear about how I would feel the next day.  The only worry I had was when my granddaughter decided that playing hide and seek under the clothes rack wasn’t enough fun and decided to escalate this game by running away as fast as she could.  Since she is only about two feet tall I quickly lost sight of her.  Luckily she was trailing her hand across the dresses and shirts and she ran leaving a path of swaying and disheveled merchandise in her wake.  Suddenly the clothes stopped moving and I began to panic as I had not yet gained sight of her.  I turned a corner and there she was looking up at me smiling.  I told her we aren’t supposed to run in the store because it is dangerous.  I am not sure she totally understood how I felt.  It was a scary moment when I couldn’t keep my eyes on her and see her.  When I did not know where she was I was unable to watch over her and protect her.  “Please stay where I can see you!” I said.    I am so glad that I don’t have to worry about getting out of the Lord’s sight.  In Psalm 139:7-10 David says,

“…Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?  8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.  9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,  10 Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.”  Psalm 139:7-10

There is no place that we can go that the Lord cannot see us; no place that we can go that He cannot find us.  What a comforting thought.  We do not have to go through any anxiety about whether or not He is near or whether or not He can get to us in time to rescue us and save us.  I have wandered off a few times in my life but He has always been there when I called. He has never, ever lost sight of me!  He is always able to protect us and watch over us.  He is always able to find us even when we run away.  He is always able to pick us up and bring us back home.  Our Lord is truly amazing.

1 Year since my Spinal Fusion

It has been one year since my back surgery and my back is doing great!  I have not had any pain when I run or work out.  I even pulled weeds last week for about an hour and I was able to stand up straight when I was done!  The only difference I would say between my back and a “perfect, never had problems” back is that when it is cold outside and I am out in the cold, or when the weather changes rapidly my back gets a little stiff at the site of the fusion.  All in all my back is doing great.  The Lord has blessed me and it doesn’t even hurt me when I go shopping.

The decision to have the surgery was a very good decision for me.  If I had to do it all over again I would do it.  I would recommend following doctor’s orders very closely and doing your best to stay patient.  The recovery process is lengthy (especially waiting 6 months to pick up grand-babies!) but the time passes soon enough.  Read the earlier posts to get more details.  In the meantime, may God bless each of you and your families.

In His Name

My manager is out all week long and I am taking over his role while he is gone.  During this week my responsibilities have been increased and the payments I approve, the lawsuits I allow to be filed and all the other tasks I do are being viewed by others just as if they were done by my boss.  The work I am doing reflects not only on me but also on him.  For that reason, I am trying to make sure that I make the same type of decisions that he would make, exercise the same level of good judgment that he displays and represent him appropriately.  I am taking the role very seriously since every thing I am doing I am doing in his name.   It is very much like that for the Christian.  The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 3:17

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.”  Col. 3:17

As followers of Christ, we have received great blessings.  But we have also received wonderful responsibilities.  We are called to be His ambassadors and representatives in this world.  The work we do, the words we say, the things we do reflect not only on ourselves, but  also on our Lord and Savior.  We have increased responsibilities and we should take our responsibilities very seriously.  We should try to make the same decisions the Lord would make and represent Him appropriately.  Whatever we do we ought to be able to do in His Name, giving thanks to God the Father by Him!  Some may see that as pressure but it is actually a privilege.  Anything the Lord asks us to do, He will help us to do.  He will empower us and equip us to represent Him well and to do the right things in His Name!
