Just a Poem This Week

It has been a long week.  I have been having some issues with a kidney stone the last couple of weeks so I have not slept so well and have been running behind.  When I am not feeling good and just laying in bed I try to pray for others.  Here is one that I lifted up last time I wasn’t feeling well.   Have a blessed day.

Up again to face the day,
I know not what may come my way;
Ready to rejoice or take a stand,
I know the Lord has hold of my hand.
I awoke today knowing I’m blessed
With a Savior who will help me pass each test.

Philippians 4:14 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Pleasing Others

Last week I had a long conversation with someone who was a little distressed because they were struggling with making others happy.  While it seems like a majority of people in our society are focused on “looking out for number one” and are not concerned about any one else there are many who are too worried about making others happy.  While I do not profess to know everything, there are a couple of things that I do know to be facts.  First, you cannot make everybody happy.  Second, you are not supposed to worry about making everybody happy.  As a matter of fact the Bible says in Luke 6:26

Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.”  Luke 6:26

Our goal in this world should not be to make everybody happy.  People are fickle and some of them have their own agenda and they will tell you what they want to hear simply to manipulate you.  Some of them don’t even know what they want or need to be happy and have issues that they are dealing with and you can never meet their needs; you will never make them happy.  Our goal should be to please the Lord.  The bible says in Colossians 3:23 – 24

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”

The Lord loves you.  He has no hidden agenda.  He simply wants to be in a personal relationship with you.  There will be times where you let Him down but He will always be willing to forgive you.  There will be times when you feel like you cannot do the things He has asked you to do but He will always be willing to strengthen you.  Seek to fulfill your God-given roles in this life.  Seek to do everything as unto the Lord.  Seek to be the brother or sister He has called you to be.  Seek to be the friend He has called you to be.  If you do that, you will find that you will please the Lord.  And I wouldn’t be surprised if you please some others along the way too.

Somebody Listened!

Today I was finally able to get my computer at work fixed.  I was having challenges with the word documents for the last 10 months or so.  Every time I tried to open a document it would take about 45 seconds for the document to open.  It was the same story every time I closed one.  The first tech I talked to said that some “accelerator” had been removed due from our software list due to a new program we were using and that I just had to live with it.  The problem has grown gradually worse over the months and I have mentioned it to other techs when I have called in to the help desk on other issues.  Nobody seemed bothered by it or if they were, they did not have any answers.

During the last few days, a new problem cropped up.  The documents I have been working on have began to shut down and close by themselves and the software had to go into recovery mode.  It would take over two minutes to recover and restart each document. I called our help desk about the issue and this time I was fortunate enough to speak to someone who took the time to listen and was able to help me.  He “remoted in” to my computer and deleted the old word program and reinstalled a new one.  Now with the new software everything is working just like it is designed to do.  I am so glad I finally spoke to someone who listened.  It reminded me of Psalm 116:1 where the psalmist writes:

“I love the LORD, because He hears My voice and my supplications.”  Psalm 116:1

The Lord cares about us and is concerned about the things that trouble us.  He is willing to listen to the things that concern us and He is able to intervene and make a difference in those problem areas of our lives!  What a blessing it is that the Lord is willing to listen and able to help.  You don’t have to feel ignored!  You don’t have to feel helpless or hopeless!  The Lord is able to come into the midst of our situations and resolve any problem.  There is no struggle or obstacle that is too great for His touch.  He can even turn around our lives.  The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old things have passed away; and all things have become new.  2 Corinthians 5:17

The Holy Spirit enters inside of us just like a computer technician remotes into a computer.  But the Holy Spirit does not leave!  He indwells us and empowers and equips us to live a life pleasing unto God.  He helps us to function as we were designed!  Our Lord is so good and so gracious!

The Time Is Past – Start a New Life

This week was a busy week for me.  I am trying to finish up one semester and get started on another summer semester.  In the midst of all of this I was blessed to be able to share with a young person in regard to some challenges they were facing.  They are trying to make some changes in their life and the reaction they are receiving from some people is less than supportive.  In fact, some people are actually discouraging them from making these changes.  It seems like there is pressure to stay where they are, mired in a situation which threatens to drag them down.

As I visited with this individual I shared with them a similar situation from my past.  I was much younger man and had recently asked God to help me change my priorities.  There was a time in my life when I allowed alcohol to set my schedule.  I would eat a big, late breakfast so that I could skip lunch and dinner.  This allowed me to start drinking right after work and “catch a buzz” a lot more quickly.  Drinking not only set my eating schedule, it set my social calendar too.  I did not go to certain places with certain people because I knew that alcohol would not be a part of the scene.

God was not in first place in my life.  He probably came in third behind a couple of guys named Bud and Miller.  It is painful and embarrassing now for me to look back on those times.  I knew that God was calling me to a deeper, stronger, more meaningful relationship with Him but I never fully committed to that relationship.  I finally decided that things needed to change.  I decided to cut back on my drinking.  At first I just decided to only drink on Fridays and Saturdays.  I allowed for special occasions on Mondays and Thursdays depending on the football game or sporting events.   Pretty soon it became evident that limiting my drinking to certain days was not working as planned.  I made a strategic move in my effort to change things and decided that I would limit the number of beers that I drank each week.  I started off with 24.  Then I decided that maybe 30 was better.

Ultimately, early one morning as I sat at the foot of the toilet, I realized that my plan was not working.  We had a party at our house and I was the life of it.  I was not mean or rude but as I sat on the floor at 3 am I knew that I was not the man that God meant me to be.  I was not the husband God called me to be. I was not the father God called me to be.  All of these years I had allowed alcohol to dictate my eating, my social activities and everything else.  I did not need to change things, I needed to change me.  The problem was, I could not change me.  As I sat on the floor that night I confessed to the Lord that I had been doing wrong.  I had not been a good steward of my time, my family or the blessings He had placed in my hands.  I confessed to the Lord that I had tried many ways to control the situation and I could not do it.  I asked Him to do it for me.

I went to bed and slept.  As I slept I dreamed.  I dreamed that I was driving down the road and I saw a convenience store on the road ahead.  As I drove I thought, “Man, some beer sure would be good” and I put on my blinker to turn into the parking lot of that store.  In my dream the Lord asked me, “Do you really want me to help you?”  I said, “Yes, Lord”.  And in my dream I turned off the blinker and kept going right on down the road.  That day was February 22, 1997.  I have not had a drink since that day and I have been doing a much better job of letting God be the priority in my life.

A few months later I was at a wedding.  Some friends were giving me a hard time for not having a drink.  They said I was only doing because I was afraid my wife would gripe at me.  I let them know that I was not drinking because it was not in God’s will for my life.  I can tell you that my reply to them did not slow down the “hard time” I was receiving.  When I got home I opened up my bible and after awhile the Lord led me to a passage I had never seen before.

1 Peter 4:3  “For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.  4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you”

The Lord was addressing exactly what I was going through in His word!  My old friends were surprised that I was not acting the same way.  They were encouraging me to fall back to my old ways but the Lord was encouraging me to be strong and keep moving forward in my relationship with Him!  His word told me not to be surprised that some people might give me a hard time about this change He was making in me.  In the rest of the chapter, He reminded me everyone only answers to Him.  He also told me that He has gifted everyone and given them a place and a purpose in His kingdom.   He had a place even for someone who used to only give Him the leftovers of their time!  What a gracious and forgiving God we serve!

Those were glorious words to someone making a fresh start.  I was blessed to be able to share those with someone this week.  The Lord is willing to help us to make a fresh start.  He is willing to forgive us of all of our sins!  He is willing to do a new work in us and use us in His kingdom!

If you find yourself around people that are not supportive of His work in you, you may need to consider if you should be hanging around those people.  The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33

Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good morals.”

Don’t let anyone keep you from experiencing God’s best.  Be the person that God called you to be.   Don’t try to do things on your own, let Jesus Christ do a transforming work in your life.

Why Should I go On?

That is a question that people ask some times from the pit of despair and heartache.  Some of them are unable to come up with a sufficient answer and rather than wait for the sun to come up and try again the next day they opt not to face another day……

This weekend was a difficult one for our church.  The grandson of a former member, a young man well-known and well-loved by our congregation for many, many years took his life.  He was a smart, fun, handsome young man and I do not know the weight of the issues which led to his untimely and unnecessary demise.  I know that he leaves behind a grieving family who is struggling to deal with their loss.  I know that he leaves behind friends who are wrestling with questions that will never be answered.  I know that he will be missed.

At this time I ask for your prayers so that his family, his friends and our church members will stand strong in their faith and experience the Lord’s peace during this time of grief.  I know that this young man was a Christian.  For that reason, I know that despite this wrong decision, he is with our Lord today and he is at peace.  I want to be sure to say that it was a wrong decision because I don’t want anyone to think that just because this young man is at peace now justifies the action that took place.  I never want to see anyone else take that same path again.  I do not know the circumstances in this tragic incident but I want everyone to know that we all will face trials in our lives.  WE WILL ALL DEAL WITH CRAZY, INSURMOUNTABLE SITUATIONS THAT MAKE US FEEL LIKE GIVING UP AND GIVING IN.  Some deal with chronic depression or other issues that may make some of us ask, “How can I go on?”  Some of those situations may make some of us, “Why should I go on?”  The answer is the same to both of those questions.  You can go on and you should go on because the Lord loves you!   He still has good and glorious plans for your life.

Even King David, a man with such a very close relationship with God that he is called “a man after God’s own heart” faced times of great sadness and frustration; there were times he felt like giving up.  In Psalm 31:9 David wrote:

“Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also.  For my life is spent with sorrow and my years with sighing…”  Psalm 31:9-10

In many songs, David expressed the same feeling; one of being overwhelmed by grief, despair and the trials and tribulations of life.  Yet through it all David never gave up!  In Psalm 31 David speaks of how, in the midst of his sadness, he cried to the Lord and trusted in the Lord and God delivered him from his enemy.  David ends the psalm with an exhortation to all who feel distressed and discouraged.

“Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.”  Psalm 31:24

Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed by grief, despair and the trials and tribulations of life today.  Maybe you are not sure if you can go on.  You can!  You can be strong in the Lord!  You can receive courage from the Lord!  You can make it through whatever situation you face through the power that Jesus Christ offers you!  Don’t give up and don’t give in!  His peace is available right here, right now in this earthly realm for all who will trust in Him!  The sun will rise tomorrow!  And the Lord will be with you!  He will help you face the day!  He will help you to be strong and take courage!

Need Some Pleasant Words?

I am continuing to do well in my studies and am halfway through my first 8 week term during this summer session.  I have received some grades on a couple of different papers that I have written for the two classes that I am currently taking and I made very high grades on both of them.  I was particularly pleased with one of the papers as the professor took the time to write me a note saying, “Nicely done.  Good arguments and very logical!”  While the grade in his class is about the same as the grade I have in the other class, I find that his feedback on this paper and other work has been very encouraging and has kept me more interested and engaged in his class.  It is very important for us to remember the power of kind words in motivating others.  The bible says in Proverbs 16:24

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.  Proverbs 16:24

Pleasant and encouraging words are not only great at motivating a student to stay engaged and moving forward in class, but they are also important in helping affirm someone’s value and worth in this world.  Pleasant words can brighten someone’s day and help them to keep pressing on and moving forward despite the homework, headaches and heartaches that life can sometimes send their way.  Pleasant words let others know that you care and that they are an important and valuable part of your life.  It takes a little longer to offer pleasant words and kindness to others, but you never know the difference you may make in someone’s day.

I pray that you will know how valuable and special you are to Almighty God.  He loves you so much that He gave His Only Begotten Son for you so that if you place your trust in Him you can have everlasting life.

God loves you so much that He is willing to give you the strength to meet whatever challenge you face today.  You CAN do all things through Christ who WILL STRENGTHEN YOU!

God loves you!  I hope that you will receive those pleasant words and that they will be sweet to your soul and will bring healing to your bones!

Where Are You Headed?

I went on a road trip last week that lasted about three hours.  The destination was great but the trip getting there was a little nerve wracking.  I have to admit that I am a little bit “directionally challenged”.  I can do okay with East and West and North and South in the NCAA tournament brackets but put me in the woods and ask me about it and I will be in trouble.  Give me a compass and I will probably just break off the crystal face and use it to start a fire like Survivor man and hunker down until somebody comes and rescues my directionally challenged self.  Yes, when it comes to road trips, there are times when I am not sure where I am headed.

If you are headed somewhere for vacation I can give you great recommendations for places to go but I can’t tell you how to get there.  The only place I know for sure how to get to is heaven.  Jesus said in John 14:6

“I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Christ came and lived the perfect, sinless life.  He performed miracles which affirmed His claim that He is the Son of God.  He was crucified and placed in the tomb.  On the third day He arose again in fulfillment of the Holy Scriptures.  After His resurrection He appeared to more than 500 witnesses at one time (1 Corinthians 15:6).  The Bible says that those who “believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” and shall dwell with Him forever in heaven.  Are you on the right path?  Are you headed to the Kingdom of the Father?  If not you could be.  The Bible says in 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I spent too much time lost on my last road trip.  Being lost is no fun.  Don’t spend any more of your time lost.  You can know where you are headed today!

“Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Romans 10:13

Happy Memorial Day!

Yay for Memorial Day!  As I think of all those wonderful days off through the years I naturally think of the times with the family playing horse shoes, having barbecue and taking a swim.  But Memorial Day is really so much more important and meaningful than just kicking off the summer with a day of fun.

As we celebrate Memorial Day we should recognize that many have given their lives that we may have the freedom to worship as we choose.  We have been blessed by the sacrifice of others.  The Bible says in John 15:13

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”  John 15:13

We are indeed blessed and should be extremely grateful that some have given their lives that we can have such great freedoms in this country.  These words in John chapter 15 were spoken by Christ who gave His life that we may have forgiveness of our sin and so that we can have fellowship with Him and with the Father.

I hope you enjoy your Memorial Day.  And I hope you take the time to reflect upon your blessings and lift up a prayer of gratitude for those who have sacrificed for us and a prayer of protection for those who are serving now.  May God bless you.

Always a keeper

My wife and I took off a couple of days with some of our friends just to get out of town and go fishing.  We are going to take the kids and grandkids to the coast in a couple of weeks but we wanted to take a quick trip for just the two of us.  We seldom get to go away just by ourselves.  We had a good time even though it was just for a couple of days.  I caught one decent size flounder that was a keeper and about 15 others that were fun to catch but too small to keep.  They did not measure up and just weren’t worth keeping.  I am glad that the Lord doesn’t make those judgments about us.  I am glad that He decides that we are all worthy to keep.  He says in John 6:37 “whosoever comes to Me, I will in no ways cast out”.  I don’t know if everybody fully appreciates how wonderful and special that is.

I know people who have faced rejection from others in their lives.  I know people who have even been turned away from their own families.  That is tragic and can hurt and harm someone for the rest of their life.  It can impact their ability to trust others and it can keep them from opening up and from ever allowing themselves to be vulnerable and to trust others again.  I pray that those people will come to know that we serve a good and gracious God.  I pray that those people will come to know that the Lord is worthy to be trusted.

The Lord promises that whoever comes to Him, He will never cast out.  He values each of us greatly.  We are all worthy of keeping in the eyes of the Lord.  There is no size or weight requirement.  There is not certain type or standard that He is looking for.  Simply come to Him and He will keep you and protect you.  He will embrace.  He will offer you forgiveness, strength, mercy and comfort.  He will never cast you out.

Continuing Education

I am back at work after being out for 3 days and I am playing “catch-up”.  I have a lot of email to read and some other tasks that stacked up while I was out of the office for an insurance seminar.  The seminar helps me to stay current on certain insurance related topics and allows me to receive credit for continuing education.  This is necessary for me to maintain my claims license.  I have to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years to meet the requirements of the state of Texas.

Sometimes the information is more interesting at certain seminars than it is at others.  This year the classes seemed to drag on over the three day period.  I was glad when it was finally over.  But I know that it helps me to meet a requirement and the information helps me perform better in the tasks that are a part of my job.

As Christians we also have continuing education requirements.  The Bible says in 2 Peter 3:18 that we are to:

“…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”  2 Peter 3:18

After we learn about the mercy and forgiveness of Christ and become Christians, we should not stop learning.  Our Lord has an expectation of us that we will grow in grace and knowledge.  We must become students of God’s word, God’s will and God’s way.  If we fail to grow in grace and knowledge we will be carried away by false doctrine and led astray by people who seek to serve themselves rather than serve the Lord.  If we fail to grow in grace and knowledge we will never overcome some of the bothersome habits of the flesh which hold us back and keep us from experiencing God’s best for us in this life.  If we fail to grow in grace and knowledge we will miss out on being able to share about God’s love and His Kingdom as capably as we would otherwise be able.  We just won’t do as well on some of the tasks that God has for us.

I pray that you will grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ this week.  I pray that I will grow too!  Until next time, stay strong in the faith.
